1   Optimal nutrient ratios for wastewater treatment
Author: Michael Winkler. For observing the legal requirements of treated wastewater, the operator of a wwtp has to manage the wastewater treatment process thoroughly to avoid exceeding the limit values. Among physical and chemical procedures the effluent treatment is based on the biological treatment by the microorganisms of the activated sludge. Therefore good knowledge of nutrient need and composition of the activated sludge is very important for operating at full capacity. Causes, consequences and counteractive measures for unfavourable nutrient ratio are described in this report; 8 pages

2   LANGE cuvette tests used by the professionals for 40 years
The document reports of the advatages of the LANGE cuvette tests. Author: Dipl.-Ing. Petra Puetz, HACH LANGE Lab product specialist. The launch of the world’s first ready-to-use reagent packages for photometric analysis in the 1960s had a substantial effect on environmental analysis. Today LANGE cuvette tests and photometers are indispensable elements of operational analysis. Innovations such as 10-fold rotational measurement have simplified analysis even further and made it more reliable. Quality assurance procedures (analytical quality assurance ADDISTA, round robin tests) are carried out and documented. The correct processing of used reagents in HACH LANGE’s own certified environment centre completes the LANGE cuvette test-system. 8 pages

3   Monitoring of digesters in biogas plants
Renewable sources of energy are gaining in importance, leading the way is the use of methane gas obtained from fermentation processes in biogas plants. All plant operators have a crucial interest in running their biogas plant as efficiently as possible. To be able to do this, reliable onsite analysis is needed, in combination with continuously operating process instruments (SOLITAX highline sc, pHD sc pH, pHD sc ORP etc.). Authors: Jürgen Wiese, EnerCess GmbH, Bad Oeynhausen, Germany; Ralf König, HACH LANGE GmbH, Düsseldorf. 12 pages

4   COD, Cost effective refilling of activated carbon filter
The leachate from a landfill in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, used to be transported by road tanker to the nearest sewage treatment plant. Since 1998 a biological treatment plant has been in operation, which has now handled more than 650,000 m3 of leachate, at a maximum rate of 350 m3/day. Four activated carbon filters, each filled with 20 m3, handle the residual COD load. The wastewater is fed into them in a sequence that depends on how long the activated carbon has been in use. A freshly regenerated filter discharges treated wastewater with a COD concentration of about 50 mg/l; this is well below the limit of 400 mg/l and is therefore a major cost factor. This can be avoided with the help of the COD cuvette test. 4 pages
