For observing the legal requirements of treated wastewater, the operator of a wwtp has to manage the wastewater treatment process thoroughly to avoid exceeding the limit values. Among physical and chemical procedures the effluent treatment is based on the biological treatment by the microorganisms of the activated sludge. Therefore good knowledge of nutrient need and composition of the activated sludge is very important for operating at full capacity.
